⚔️ How to Pray the Chaplet of St. Michael

The Chaplet of St. Michael, also called the Chaplet of the Angels, honors St. Michael and the nine choirs of angels. It is traditionally prayed using a special chaplet with nine groups of three beads.

Begin with the Sign of the Cross, then pray:

O God, come to my assistance.
O Lord, make haste to help me.

Pray a Glory Be.

Then honor each of the Nine Choirs of Angels. For each choir, pray the corresponding invocation, followed by 1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys.

6. Powers — Ask for protection against spiritual danger and deception.

7. Principalities — Ask for obedience and faithful service to God.

8. Archangels — Ask for perseverance in faith and good works.

9. Angels — Ask for the protection and guidance of the holy angels.

Finish with four Our Fathers

Pray one Our Father each in honor of:

St. Michael
St. Gabriel
St. Raphael
Your Guardian Angel

Then conclude with the traditional closing prayer:

O glorious prince St. Michael, chief and commander of the heavenly hosts, guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits, servant in the house of the Divine King and our admirable conductor, you who shine with excellence and superhuman virtue, deliver us from all evil, who turn to you with confidence, and enable us by your gracious protection to serve God more and more faithfully every day. • Home Protection Working — Place an image or medal of St. Michael near the front door. Light a white candle, pray the traditional Prayer to St. Michael, and ask specifically that your household be guarded from evil and harm. A small dish of salt can be placed nearby as a traditional protective symbol. If you want something sacramental, use holy water that has actually been blessed by a priest.

• St. Michael Threshold Blessing — Pray at your front doorway while making the Sign of the Cross over the entrance with holy water. Ask Michael to stand metaphorically “at the gate” and guard everyone who enters and leaves. This would make a particularly good house-blessing ritual.

• Cutting Away Harm — Michael's sword makes him a natural figure for a folk practice centered on breaking unhealthy attachments. Write what you want freedom from—fear, resentment, a destructive habit, etc.—on paper. Pray to Michael for strength, then tear the paper in half while saying, “St. Michael, defend me; by God's grace, help me leave behind what harms me.” Dispose of the paper afterward.

• Courage Before a Difficult Situation — Keep a St. Michael medal or holy card with you. Before an interview, confrontation, court appearance, difficult conversation, or other intimidating situation, pray the St. Michael Prayer and ask specifically for courage, clear judgment, and protection.

• Protection Candle — Place a St. Michael image behind a white candle. Traditionally you could add protective herbs such as rosemary or bay around the candle holder—not in the flame. Write the person's or household's name on paper and place it beneath the image. Pray Psalm 91 followed by the St. Michael Prayer.

• Nine-Day Protection Petition — This combines folk practice with the traditional novena structure beautifully. For nine nights, light a candle before Michael, pray the St. Michael Prayer, then state the same protection petition. On the ninth night, give thanks regardless of whether you've seen an obvious result.

• Protection Sachet — Put rosemary, bay, and a small St. Michael medal or printed prayer into a cloth bag. Pray over it and keep it in your bag, car, workplace, or near the home's entrance. I'd describe this on the site as a folk-Catholic-inspired devotional practice, rather than claiming it's an official Catholic sacramental.

• Justice Petition — Because Michael is traditionally depicted with both sword and scales, he has acquired associations with justice in devotional and folk practice.
